Steve Silver Franklin Lift Top Cocktail Table Review

PROS:
- LOTS of storage
- Solid, sturdy
- Good height (I find many coffee tables to be too short)
- On casters for increased mobility

CONS:
- Very poor stain job
- Second lift-top section somewhat pointless
- Most drawers are fake

This table has LOTS of storage. The picture in this listing does not show the true amount of storage space this table contains. If you search the web for additional pictures, you'll find that the opposite long side has large drawers on the lower portion opposite the cubbies shown in this picture. These drawers hold a great deal of items, but the downside is that the cubbies shown are not terribly deep (maybe enough for a DVD case). There's also a very deep (but short) cubby on the upper portion of the narrow edge opposite the one shown in this picture. It's perfect for holding magazines, remotes, etc. You can also hide a few items under the lift-top sections, but take care too ensure they don't interfere with the lift mechanisms when closed. The 'drawers' on the upper section of the table (above the cubbies shown in the picture) are all fake. This is to accomodate space for the lift-top mechanisms as well as the additional cubby previously mentioned.

The lift-tops are a neat idea, but depending on the configuration of your living room furniture, they may be somewhat pointless. The table top is divided into 3 sections. The one to the left (as shown in the picture) is stationary. The middle portion is a decent size and comes towards the long side shown in the picture. It comes to a nice height that is very convenient for eating or using a laptop. The third section, however, opens to the narrow edge shown in the picture. If you were to set your furniture so that the edge of your couch and an adjacent piece of furniture were perpendicular to one another at this corner, I suppose this would make sense (although you would have to stage the table off-center from the couch). However, for those sitting on the couch on the far end, this feature serves no purpose.

Overall, the table is very solid. Materials are on par with what you would expect for a table of this price point, and the lift mechanisms are very smooth in operation. All this, combined with the weight of all the items this table can store, make for one very heavy unit. Thankfully, the table does come with casters (the only bit of assembly left to the owner). I initially hesitated to install them because I was worried they may be too obvious and chinsy-looking, but the table sits so low with them installed they're almost not noticeable. They make moving the table a breeze and were definitely worth the effort to install.

For those wondering if the color in the picture is accurate, it absolutely is. This is a very dark table. However, this does bring up the largest fault of this table: the poor workmanship of the stain. Right out of the box, it was obvious the workmanship was very sloppy. The thickness of the stain is very inconsistent, and on a table this large and (supposedly) monotone of a finish it is easily noticeable. It's clear the assembly method for this table is to assemble and then stain, which leads to stain being thin and light in several of the 'nooks and crannies'. In addition, it appears as though ours may have been put in the box a bit wet. On one edge of the table top, the stain is noticeably lighter. Looking at the protective foam piece used to package the table, it's clear some of the stain came off onto the styrofoam.

If we had purchased this table from a 'brick-and-mortar' store, I would defniitely have returned this table, or at minimum had them fix it. However, given the complexity of trying to repackage and then ship this item, we've decided to deal with the table as-is and perhaps attempt to fix the stain issues on our own.

In all, it's a very good table. But for the price, I would expect something a bit more 'flawless'
