AIE-305 12" Handheld Heat - Impulse Bag Sealer w/ 5mm Seal Review

When the time came to replace my FoodSaver, I analysed what features about the Foodsaver I liked, and what I disliked. What I liked is the ability to vacuum the air out of the bags for freezing foods, however this was something that I rarely did due to the cost of the special bag material offered by Foodsver. However, what I used it mostly for was to bag and seal leftovers for the refrigerator, re bagging bulk food items for storage and for storing hobby items. For these many task I use it several times a day. I normally buy 9x12" 2mil Poly bags by the 1000's and use those for my storage media. Works great, but what I dislike about the FoodSaver for this task was that the weld not being large enough and it was limited in the thickness of the bag material, plus, it was too slow.

I started looking at the impulse sealers and decided on the AIE-305. AIE seems to win my award for being a credible company with an outstanding product. The 305 model has a 5mm weld width that gives me an airtight, water tight seal. The extra width was important to me for my use. There are other units such as the model 300 with a 2mm weld width.

Once you set the dial for the storage media thickness, you are ready to go. You do this very simply by putting your bag in place and with the dial setting on zero, pressing down the arm for a seal. You repeat this process, slowly turning the dial up at each attempt until you get the required seal. For a 2 mil bag, my setting is just under the number two on the dial.

To use, place your bag under the arm, press the handle down and it seals it immediately. You will hear a buzz for a split second during the seal and it's done. There is also an LED light adjacent to the dial that lights during this process as well.

The unit ships with a spare kit to replace the Teflon and heating wire when it becomes necessary, but I do not have any knowledge of how many seals take place before this needs replacing. This is a solid metal contraption that will last a lifetime, if the way it is built is any indicator. The size of the unit takes up the same amount of space as a Foodsaver.

The only negative comes from my wife. She says it is ugly, but she is not writing this review. If you are looking for an OO La La experience when things match your refrigerator, be fore-warned, you will be greatly disappointed. This looks like a giant blue stapler. But, true to the words of Antoine de Saint-Exupery,

"Here is my secrete, it is very simple: It is only with the heart that on can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye".
